Tooth Extraction in Philadelphia, PA

As dental care professionals, our top priority at Derby Dental Group is helping our patients maintain good oral health with general and preventative care to preserve their natural teeth for as long as possible. Unfortunately, situations can still arise where tooth extraction is necessary for safeguarding the patient and their health.

What Is a Tooth Extraction?

A tooth extraction is a common, simple oral surgical procedure that involves removing a tooth from its socket in the jawbone.

When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary? Reasons Why You Might Need a Tooth Extraction

In our conservative approach to oral healthcare, we do everything we can to help our patients preserve and strengthen their natural teeth. For this reason, teeth are only extracted for medically necessary reasons.

There are several reasons why a patient might need to have a tooth pulled. Some of the most common reasons why tooth extraction might be recommended include:

  • A traumatic injury impacts the mouth and severely injures, breaks, or damages a tooth beyond repair.
  • A tooth becomes severely infected to the point where root canal therapy cannot resolve the infection.
  • Advanced periodontal disease has led to periodontal ligament or jawbone degeneration, compromising a tooth.
  • The patient is preparing for orthodontic work that requires the removal of a tooth to create space in the jawbone for treatment.
  • The patient is preparing to receive a full denture or other type of restorative treatment that requires the extraction of one or more remaining teeth.

Our Services: Tooth Extraction in Philadelphia

Derby Dental Group is equipped with advanced tools and we are experienced in a variety of surgical techniques that allow us to provide our patients with a variety of tooth extraction services.

Types of Tooth Extractions

  • Simple Tooth Extraction - Also known as having a tooth pulled, a simple tooth extraction is a procedure performed when a tooth has erupted above the gums and still in one piece below the gum line.
  • Surgical Tooth Extraction (Complex Tooth Extraction) - A surgical tooth extraction is a more complex procedure that is performed when it is not possible to "pull" a tooth as a result of tooth impaction or fracturing below the gum line.

Tooth Extraction With Rapid Healing

Depending on a patient's comprehensive treatment plan, following tooth extraction, we provide treatment options designed to accelerate and support the body's natural healing and recovery process, such as bone grafting.

What to Expect: The Tooth Extraction Process

Consultation and Examination

The treatment process begins with an examination and consultation. During this appointment, we will take diagnostic images that enable our prosthodontists and periodontists to evaluate the patient's teeth, periodontal ligaments, and jawbone beneath the gum line. We will also go over your full medical history to reduce post-operative complications. This will help us determine the type of tooth extraction and extraction process that will be most appropriate and beneficial for the patient.

Patient Comfort and Sedation Dentistry

Your comfort and treatment experience are of the utmost importance, and that's why we always use only the highest quality local anesthetics during our treatments. This ensures that patients are fully numbed and feel no pain or discomfort during their oral procedures.

Additionally, we offer several options for dental sedation, including light-conscious sedation with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and moderate oral sedation with a selection of prescription sedatives. Before your extraction procedure, we can talk with you about these options and help you determine the most appropriate solution to help you feel relaxed and comfortable throughout your appointment.

The Extraction Procedure

Once the local anesthetic has been administered and taken full effect, we can begin the tooth extraction process. Depending on the patient's needs and the type of extraction being performed, this process will differ.

  • Simple Extraction - During a simple extraction, we use a tool called an elevator to loosen the tooth by gently rocking it inside the socket. Once loose enough, we use dental forceps to pull it from the socket. Patients sometimes feel some slight pressure during this process, but they will not experience pain.
  • Surgical or Complex Extraction - Surgical extractions are all slightly different because every patient's anatomy is slightly different. During this process, we make a small incision in the gum tissue either above an impacted tooth or along the side of a broken tooth. We then extract the underlying tooth before closing the incision with sutures.

Before your extraction appointment, we will walk you through the procedural steps that we have outlined for your tooth extraction to ensure you understand what to expect on the day of your treatment.

Tooth Extraction Recovery and Aftercare

Every patient is different, but generally, initial healing takes place within one to two weeks of extraction, and complete healing and recovery occur within three to four weeks of extraction.

We will provide you with thorough aftercare and recovery instructions to support rapid healing and prevent any complications. These instructions will include guidance on the formation of a blood clot, caring for and cleaning the surgical site, diet, and pain management.

Post-Recovery: Tooth Replacement Treatment Options

We offer a wide array of restorative dental treatment options to restore your smile and safeguard your oral health after tooth extraction. From dental implant-supported options to traditional bridges, we can help you determine the restorative treatment that is right for you.
